first chapter

I read this bit on the bus :) at first I thought that the man who picked J.H up from the coach was Dracula, but now it is evident that he was not. I noticed in this chapter that there were a lot of references to 'the sublime', for example the mighty slopes of forest... lofty steeps... jagged rocks... pointed crags... snowy peaks rose grandly... mighty rifts... etc. This made the feeling more scary and intense, almost as if I was there witnessing it. It was a bit spooky when J.H describes how the coachman makes the wolves go away, as this gave the idea that he might be a vampire. Over all I think that this was a good first chapter as some back ground information was given, and little hints as to what might happen further on in the novel were suggested.

  1. Sublime well identified here!! A good range of quotations to demonstrate it too! Why do you say that it's evident that the coach driver was not Dracula? And why did you think it was Dracula? Good start!
